Highlights from 2024 Monash Volunteer Awards
Plus read on to find out who won the prestigious MGA OSCARS!
Student volunteers from across the University gathered at the PARKROYAL Monash in Clayton one September evening to celebrate the remarkable achievements of those who have given back to their student community. The MGA invited our shining stars to join in on the festivities for a night of food, photos and dancing to show our immense gratitude for all the work that they do.
A contingent of graduate student volunteers, mentors and representatives who have contributed 30 hours or more of their time over the course of the year were invited by the MGA to attend the star-studded event.
For the award ceremony, various faculties and student organisations across Monash were asked to nominate and present awards to their cohort of volunteers. Suitably named the MGA OSCARS (Outstanding Services by Coursework and Research Students), our award recognises the work that our volunteers, mentors and student representatives do to improve and enrich the experience of the graduate student community.
But just like the Hollywood Oscars, this prestigious ceremony is not without its blunders. Nobody tripped on the red carpet, nor did the wrong name get announced... but the winner did almost miss his own shining moment. Having mixed up the date of the ceremony, he rushed to the PARKROYAL just in time to discover that he was in fact the winner of the MGA OCARS!
To his surprise and delight, Muhammed Vilayatteri arrived mere moments before the announcement was made. Muhammed is a PhD student in the Faculty of Engineering and the Coordinator of the MGA's popular soccer program.
MGAEC President Jonathan Robberts and Committee member Aakash Saraf presented the award to Muhammed. Of Muhammed's dedication and efforts in establishing and maintaining the soccer program, Aakash said:
"What truly sets Muhammed apart is his hands-on approach and tireless commitment. Every week, without fail, he dedicates two hours to running the soccer program. He doesn't just organise – he participates, he engages, he inspires. Muhammed handles everything from ordering and transporting supplies to ensuring each session runs smoothly."
He went on to show his appreciation - echoed by all of us here at the MGA - for Muhammed's contribution to our graduate student community:
"Muhammed, your passion, dedication, and hard work embody the very spirit of volunteerism that we celebrate tonight. Your initiative has added a new dimension to student life at Monash, creating connections and fostering a sense of belonging among our diverse graduate community. Your commitment to serving our fellow students and your ability to turn a vision into reality are truly inspiring, and may your passion continue to inspire others and foster a spirit of community and engagement among our graduate students for years to come."
The Monash Volunteer Awards ceremony was an opportunity to show our appreciation for all our graduate student volunteers – from those who help set up our events to those who advocate for student rights. We know all too well that time is precious for a graduate student, and we thank you for helping us help you.
