Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your background and your area of study?
I am Yiwen Yuan, a first-year PhD student in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. My academic
journey began with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from China, followed by a Master of
Teaching degree in Early Childhood in Australia. Prior to my PhD studies, I gained valuable hands-on
experience working as an Early Childhood Teacher across Melbourne for two years. My diverse professional
background also includes roles as an English teacher, interpreter, and journalist.
My research focuses on improving teacher professional development in early childhood education across
Australian and Chinese contexts. This passion stems from my direct experience in diverse educational
settings and my commitment to enhancing children's learning outcomes. At Monash, I have found an
enriching environment that supports my research aspirations through excellent mentorship and practical
opportunities.
What motivated you to join the executive committee? What drives you to make a difference in your
graduate committee?
Throughout my career, I have cultivated a leadership philosophy that combines hands-on management
with communication. As Head of the English Pronunciation Research Group, I guided over 200 students
and faculty members through academic initiatives and competitions, while managing substantial
research projects across the university. My roles as President of the Karate Union and Educational
Leader in early childhood further honed my ability to unite diverse groups toward common goals.
These leadership experiences are complemented by my achievements in public speaking and journalism,
where I learned the importance of effective advocacy and network building.
Beyond my academic and leadership roles, I enjoy badminton, volleyball, and table tennis, as well as
exploring exhibitions and museums. As your President, I am working closely with MGAEC to foster a
welcoming and inclusive environment for all graduate students. Whether it is through organising
social events, advocating for your needs, or simply having a chat over coffee, I am committed to
ensuring your graduate experience is meaningful and enriching. Together, we can build a stronger,
more connected Monash graduate community through understanding, action, and collaboration.
