Monash University wants to ensure that all of its students are on track to pass and complete their course on time. To do this, the University regularly monitors and checks the progress of all coursework students, and will intervene when it identifies students at risk of non-completion.
If you have failed units, you will be assigned a risk level and be asked via email to complete an online tool (either My Progress and Support or My Academic Progress Response). The purpose of this check-in is to help ensure you have access to the support you need to succeeded in your studies, and to assure the University that you are on track to pass.
If you have a high risk level and do not respond to this process, it can have a serious impact on your enrolment and can lead to you being removed from your course. We strongly recommend you contact an MGA advocate for advice if you receive one of these emails.
Risk Levels
If you have failed units or have not completed a compulsory course requirement, you will be assigned an academic progress risk level.
Level 1
What this means: You have failed one or more units, but haven’t otherwise met the unsatisfactory academic progress criteria. You will be offered advice to help you get back on track.
What you need to: Complete My Progress and Support online tool (link included in the email you received) and then attend any academic progress meeting you are invited to.

Level 2
What this means: You have met the unsatisfactory academic progress criteria for the first time. You will be given advice and recommendations. You may have conditions placed on your enrolment.
What you need to: Complete My Progress and Support online tool (link included in the email you received) and then attend any academic progress meeting you are invited to.
How an MGA advocate can help you: Before you complete My Progress and Support, we can talk with you about what has been going on and help you identify and address any underlying barriers to success. We can assist you in completing My Progress and Support. We can attend the academic progress meeting with you as a support person.
Level 3
What this means: The University is considering you for exclusion from your course. This is because you have met the unsatisfactory academic progress criteria again, or you failed to comply with previous enrolment conditions, or you have failed to complete a compulsory course requirement.
What you need to: Complete My Academic Progress Response online tool and attend any meeting or APC hearing you are invited to.
How an MGA advocate can help you: Before you complete My Academic Progress Response, we can talk with you about what has been going on. We can assist you in completing My Academic Progress Response. We can help you prepare for and attend the APC hearing with you as a support person.
What do I need to say?
Everyone’s experience and circumstances are different. In short, the key things to think about are:
- What happened that impacted your studies / meant you failed?
- What have you done to address this?
- What will you do in the future to help you succeed in your studies? What is your plan?
Speak with an MGA advocate for individualised advice on how to best present your circumstances to the University.
What can I do while waiting to speak with an MGA advocate?
Reflect on what you think might have impacted your studies. Look over the My Progress and Support or My Academic Progress Response questions. You can begin drafting your responses (both tools allow you to save and exit without submitting). Both tools can help you in recognising barriers to success.
If you have experienced illness or a significant life event that had a big impact on your ability to study, start preparing supporting documents (only required if you are at Level 3, other levels cannot provide supporting documents).
I have received a notice that I am excluded due to unsatisfactory academic progress. Can I appeal this decision?
Yes, appeals are available if your case meets certain and specific grounds. Contact an MGA advocate for advice, and to do so quickly because the time in which to appeal is quite short.
I have been told I have to change my enrolment. I do not like this decision. Can I appeal it?
Yes, it is possible to request a review of enrolment conditions. Contact an MGA advocate for advice, and to do so quickly because the time in which to request a review is quite short.
