Preparing for your exams

Tips to following the rules so that you can thrive in your studies.

Published Date 28/05/2025

The MGA team wishes you all the best with your upcoming exams! Below is some important information you need to know before your exam.

#1 Act early if you anticipate tech issues

Technical difficulties can occur at the worst of times, including when you may be sitting an assessment. If for any reason you’re worried about this, call in for back-up in advance! Monash eSolutions can loan you a device or even smaller tools like a mouse or keyboard. Get in touch with them sooner rather than later!

#2 Read your exam instructions carefully

Before you begin your assessment task, make sure you check the instructions thoroughly. Each exam or assessment (even in the same faculty) will have different rules, so it is crucial that you make sure you know what you are and are not allowed to do during the exam. It is important to note details such as reading times, whether or not you’re allowed to bring notes in or if there are any provisions against the use of AI. Failing to do so can get you in trouble.

#3 Make sure to leave your phone behind

The use of phones during exams is typically prohibited. Even if it is turned off or if you use it for something else, you should always keep it somewhere else off your person for the duration of your exam. Better safe than sorry!

#4 If you get into trouble during your exams, contact an MGA advocate

As we’ve said, the most important thing is that you adhere to these rules strictly. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you’re not sure what to do, we are here to help. Our advocacy service is free, confidential and independent from the University. Contact us at mga-advocacy@monash.edu.
