National Volunteer Week – Celebrating MGA Volunteers

Have you ever wondered what our volunteers get up to? Meet two star vols who love what they do.

Thank you to all our volunteers for bringing your enthusiasm, energy and smiles to our events and community outreach programs over the past semester! Your precious time really makes the MGA go round and we appreciate you!

In honour of National Volunteer Week last week, we asked two of our regulars to share some of their experiences with us so we can find out more about what our volunteers do.

Imaobong Umoesen, Masters in Environment and Sustainability

When I volunteer with the MGA, I assist with setting events up, breaking down events, interacting with students and staff and helping to pack up.

I think volunteering is a great way to give back to the University community and help others. It is a great way to make friends and it promotes personal growth and self-esteem. 

I have also developed employability skills and learned about paid opportunities in my volunteering roles.

What I enjoy most about volunteering is putting smiles on students’ faces. I love making friends from different cultures and learning about their cultures, working as a team with others and rendering services whenever the need arises.

Kushal Saini, Master of Biomedical and Health Sciences

I have been actively volunteering with the MGA since last year. I have participated in events like Free Lunches, Sustainability Festivals and Orientation Week.

For me, volunteering is about learning new things, talking to new people and developing skills like leadership, time management, and good communication. When students feel lost at an event and don’t know what to do, I can help them feel comfortable and included.

I think the MGA Free Lunches are the best events. The MGA always tries to organise great catering services, and most of the time, they provide different cuisines, which is good.
