Highlights from the MGA Thesis Bootcamp

A grateful student thanks MGA for a Thesis Bootcamp gift pack from Platter and Boe!

Last week, we hosted the annual MGA Thesis Bootcamp, a free, four-day intensive writing workshop for PhD and Masters by Research students who wanted to take their thesis to a whole new level.

The students who were selected for the program came prepared with a piece of work and writing goals they wanted to achieve. Most of them participated via Zoom and a few students also chose to take part in person at Clayton Campus.

What they all had in common was the desire to sit down and write.

MGA program leader Casey Chen provided the structure, inspiration, support and tasty snacks to motivate them.

Add these ingredients together, and four days later, many thousands of words were written!

Here’s what some of the Bootcamp participants had to say about their experience:

“The thing I liked most was the feeling that I am not alone in this journey, and the ability to concentrate and write in blocks.”

“The Thesis Bootcamp really helped me to sit and not be afraid to write. I have exceeded my own goal as now I have the complete structure of my chapters and have so much to write for the next few days.”

“I valued the encouragement from everyone and the tips we were able to share.”

The MGA would like to thank the Learning Skills advisor from the Student Academic Success team for their one-on-one consultations with participants. Students were able to get advice about their writing, ask how to overcome writer’s block and other vital questions.

We also appreciate the work of our resident yoga instructor Yohana, who provided the students with a daily dose of grounding and exercise.

Overall, we were so pleased to provide these students with the opportunity to advance their writing in a short amount of time. If this event sounds like something you would like to take part in, make sure you stay tuned next year for our Thesis Bootcamp 2023!
